Arthur Hayes is the co-founder and CEO of BitMEX , a platform where professional investors trade bitcoin and crypto-currency derivatives. BitMEX allows bitcoin accepting businesses and bitcoin traders to minimize currency risk and leverage their bitcoins by allowing them to hedge and speculate on the future value.
As I have spent my entire professional career in Hong Kong, that is where my network is primarily based. It also helps that Hong Kong is one of the major financial centers globally. It is very surreal to run your own Bitcoin based futures exchange here. I have been trading on derivatives exchanges my whole professional career. It has always been a dream to own my own exchange, and now I do.
After I was let go from my job at Citibank in Hong Kong, I discovered Bitcoin. Initially I began actively trading the currency. Then I realized that I wanted to build a long term career in this new industry. My skill set resides in derivatives trading and structuring. There was no dominate Bitcoin based derivatives exchange in late 2013. That is when I decided to create my own exchange.
The greatest challenge is to produce consumer facing applications that use Bitcoin. Making it simple enough to use for the average person is proving to be very difficult. Once Bitcoin and other digital currencies can be used easily, then adoption will skyrocket.
BitMEX will offer retail investors globally access to the financial markets using Bitcoin and financial derivatives. We want to allow the 80% of the world that is not serviced by traditional financial institutions the ability to invest in equities, bonds, FX, and commodities. In short, we will allow anyone anywhere the ability to trade anything as long as they have access to digital currencies.
I usually arrive in the office at 9 am and answer emails. I then help direct our China customer service and sales staff to product relevant content for our growing Chinese user base. I like to attend a lunchtime yoga class. In the afternoon and early evening, I mainly focus on how to increase the awareness of BitMEX and work on upcoming new products. During the night Hong Kong time, I interact with the team based in North American time zones.
I am looking forward to increasing the awareness and knowledge surrounding the digital currency industry. As I am a big fan of electronic music, one of my favorite underground clubs is Arkham.
