Sonny Vu – Founder of Misfit and Elemental Machines
Sonny Vu works with founders to build companies that aim to have a positive, long-lasting impact on as many people as possible. His work revolves around getting the important new technologies resulting from scientific breakthroughs to the markets. Current themes include materials science and chips that enable energy-related and other engineering breakthroughs and novel biotechnology that can effectively scale synthetic biology for affordable, clean food production.
Vu has founded and built a number of companies: Elemental Machines (IoT for complex processes), Misfit (wearables for fashion; acquired by Fossil Group for $260m), AgaMatrix (biosensors and digital health for diabetes), FireSpout (natural language processing for information retrieval; acquired by Ask Jeeves). Before doing startups, he worked at Microsoft Research in NLP under Kai-Fu Lee, worked on a PhD in Linguistics at MIT under Noam Chomsky, and studied math at UIUC.
Alexandra Wright-Gladstein – CEO of Ayar Labs
Alexandra Wright-Gladstein is the CEO of Ayar Labs, which is speeding up computing by using light to move data between chips instead of electricity. Their first product is a 12.8 Tbps optical connectivity system for AI training and next-generation supercomputer and cloud data center architectures. It addresses the copper interconnect bottleneck problem with a light-based solution that offers >10x improvements in bandwidth, latency, and power. Wright-Gladstein founded the company while at MIT, where she was the energy entrepreneurship lead. She has a background in energy efficiency and smart grids from EnerNOC.
Brynne Kennedy – CEO and Founder of Topia
Brynne Kennedy is the CEO and Founder of Topia, the platform for the mobile workforce. Topia provides the leading global mobility management solution to move and manage companies’ global talent, enabling them to work everywhere. She founded Topia after being an extensive road warrior herself as an investment banker and has raised more than $90 million dollars from top venture capital funds NEA and Notion Capital. She is also the Founder of #Mobility4All, to which Topia contributes 1% of its revenue to help those fleeing poverty and conflict.
Kennedy has won Entrepreneur of the Year in the Women in IT Awards and Women of the Future Awards, London Business School’s Distinguished Entrepreneur Award and Management Today’s 35 Under 35. In 2017, she was named a Workforce Game Changer, one of 25 people changing the HR industry, and was further recognized with the Meritorious Service Award from the global mobility industry. She holds a B.A. in History from Yale University and an MBA from London Business School.
