During his 25 years at EA, Gardner was the first employee in Europe and built the European business from scratch. In 2010, he moved on to co-found London Venture Partners and in 2011, as a General Partner, Gardner invested in Supercell, which quickly became one of the fastest growing gaming companies in the world.
I know it sounds like a cliche but I invested in the people. What I saw was a team, which is already unusual, people who had previously worked together and knew what they wanted. They had built a process and a pipeline for building games and testing out ideas. They learned very fast, they adapted and they were not afraid to make mistakes, kill a bad project and move on.
I continue to look for great teams. Discussions often start around an idea or a product, but then I quickly want to dig under that to understand the people behind it. You can have the perfect product but the wrong timing or any number of other variables that cause the first attempt to fail. Then you must rely on the team to analyse, correct or kill and continue.
Working at EA has had a deep impact on me. At EA, I understood the importance and process of building a global business with multiple franchises. Most importantly I learned about company culture and how significant it is in attracting and sometimes repelling people. It was a thrilling experience and I love many people that I’ve journeyed with from EA. That has given me passion for great companies and a wonderful industry.
That more and more people play games. Seeing the smiles, the thrills and the attraction of the products. It is a bit like a new universe. The big bang of electronics arrived and games have been ever expanding ever since!
Me and my partners met a really bright team but they aren’t working on a game so it was outside our charter at LVP. We were still excited and feel that AI is needed to help sift through otherwise too much data. Bright Sun spots companies that are on the move and alerts investors. Maybe one day I won’t need to do much but click YES or NO for investments, much like a hot or not game concept!
I love Slush. I love the informal but professional feeling and the accessibility of interesting talent (both speakers and startups). My expectations are that the team will deliver a charming experience in a more comfortable venue and that I will make a few more friends along the way!
