Walkbase was one of the over 600 companies presenting at last year’s Slush – we caught up with CEO Tuomas Wuoti to talk about their experiences from the event, which lead to new customers and a whole new regional focus – Russia.
The Turku, Finland based retail analytics company provides real-time customer insights for brick-and-mortar shops, thus optimizing marketing and operations, leading to increased sales by analysing customer behaviour, visit durations and customer loyalty.
At Slush’12, the firm wanted to stand out amongst the startup swarm and hacked together a custom live demo of the venue, monitoring all visitor movements (in aggregated, anonymous data, relax!) and presenting that real time data at their booth, revealing the most popular talks, areas and people flow.
“The demo was neat and had a definite WOW effect. My tip for Slush firms would be to put together a cool live demo and try to make it relevant to the event, not just a generic demo that will get lost in all the noise. A demo is 100x better than flashy banners” advices Tuomas.
The biggest takeaway for Walkbase was, however, acquiring eventual customers and meeting angel investors, which led to an investment round shortly thereafter.
These encounters have also led to new customers in Russia. In the year that has passed, Walkbase has gotten very familiar with the red-eye to Moscow. And the experiences have been fantastic, according to Tuomas, who has an immense respect for the straight-forward, no-nonsense approach to negotiations in Russia – “investors are tough to negotiate with but you can also be tough back”.
“To get initial traction in Russia, it helps a lot to have local investors onboard”, he remarks. “Given the customer base, the potential is huge and nothing can be done half-baked, Tuomas concludes.
Team Walkbase, see you again at #slush13!
