With our pace of life it is no wonder we forget how important it is to drink water and often replace it with countless cups of coffee or sugary drinks. Caktus, one of the first companies that registered at Slush and a startup born in Finland, is set to change our habits with the solution that tracks, motivates and coaches people towards balanced hydration and better performance. Their product, named The Hug, consists of a sensor and a companion mobile app. Just slip the sensor around your water bottle and let the app do the rest.
Let’s see how hydration and hugs go together.
What is your team like?
We have an amazing team consisting of the electrical engineer, the designer/manufacturing engineer, the developer and the business guy. We got to know each other at Aalto Design Factory in Helsinki, while working on different product development projects. Olli joined the team later, after convincing the other guys of his programming and hamburger eating skills.
At the moment we are part of the technology accelerator (NJ Techlaunch) in the US. The startups in the program make a small and very supportive family. We all share both the glory of success and the lessons of failure. It really helps.
Against all odds, the team has lost weight during their time in the promised land of junk food! Must be the hydration…
How did you come up with the name for your product, The Hug?
The name was a natural follow-up to the sensor form created by our designer Tappi, who got his inspiration from thinking how good it would feel to hug his two kids who were still back in Finland at that time.
What drives and excites you to accomplish this?
We are passionate about what we do, that is by far the strongest motivator and excitement. Since we started working on the concept about a year ago, we’ve paid much more attention to how much water we drink, and it has significantly changed how we feel. For instance, Tappi replaced his daily dose of 15 cups of coffee with water. The guy is now a fresh and improved version of his old self. Long story short, we want to help others discover how proper hydration can impact their life.
What’s more, it’s been awesome to see people get excited about our product and tell us they can’t wait to get their hands on it.
What makes a great entrepreneur?
Believing in what you do is very important. If we had given up when we got our first “No’s” we wouldn’t be featured here now. We do believe our solution will help people and we keep on going. And most importantly, we know hard work always pays off.
A big kippis and cheers to Caktus in the US, fingers crossed that someone will buy the guys a drink at Slush this year! We will be featuring more startups, speakers and interviews in the Slush 2013 blog, covering the Startup Scene of Helsinki’s and beyond, before, during and after the 13-14th of November.
