It is tremendously exciting to see how Finland’s mobile games industry has been booming with the success of companies like Supercell and Rovio. This year at Slush, keep your eye on a new Finnish game maker – Grand Cru – that has recently raised $11M. The startup has been quietly working on their first game called Supernauts for two years. The game has not yet been released and the anticipation is palpable. Ari Kuokka, Marketing Manager at Grand Cru, says, “Our vision is to build a company for the top talent in the industry, and so far we’ve been pretty good at this.”
What is your approach to making games?
Hardcore gamers have no shortage of games where you express yourself creatively. We think it’s about time everybody who plays typical casual games can get in on the fun of building amazing things yourself and – especially – making things together. We believe there is a need for a deeper social experience in the mobile and tablet space – that is what our game Supernauts is all about.
Why is your team the right one to revolutionize the gaming industry?
We come from various backgrounds and expertise levels that are necessary to build the perfect touch screen experience with AAA quality graphics on mobile combined with synchronous multiplayer gameplay scaling up to tens of millions of users. Our company is the sum of its employees.
What drives you to do what you do?
We believe that given the right tools people can create beautiful things together. It is very exciting to see how people are having fun together in the world that we have created. This same rule also applies to our own company culture. I think it also shows in our products.
What problems do you face and how do you tackle them?
With all the opportunities and all great ideas out there, keeping a tight focus is a challenge. We stay focused by making sure all our decisions and actions drive us towards our vision. We keep our culture open and give as much individual responsibility to everyone as possible.
