Jillian Manus has heard tons of pitches during her VC career and she has valuable insight into communicating your company’s story. Jillian shared some good advice on delivering the perfect pitch and impressing your audience, right before the Slush 100 Pitching Competition Semifinals!
More about her background: Jillian is Managing Partner of Structure Capital, a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm that invests in early-stage technology companies. In her role with Structure Capital, Jillian provides strategic support to founding teams. Prior to this, Jillian worked for global companies like Warner Bros and Universal, Credit Suisse Zurich. Moreover, she has been a public face in the media at events for Bloomberg, Fox News and CNBC’s Squawk Box, providing business and political commentary.
The first thing that Jillian emphasises is that it’s very important how you start your pitch. Even the first word “Hello” needs to be spoken clearly and you need to be able to show that you’re confident. You might only have a few minutes or seconds to make your speech so it’s crucial to use your time well. You must show self-control and self-awareness and if you don’t, other people will. With confidence you’ll be able to motivate your employees.
What are your values? Jillian claims that your values depend on how you pitch. The investors will invest not only in your product but on your values and on you as a person. Ask yourself why your product is important to you. Not what and not how. “Why” is the keyword.
